On the court Big Man Al Horford has a killer jump shot, a mean dunk, and he can drive to the basket on any player. But this isn’t the only thing Al can do. Off the court this Big Man, has an even bigger heart. Committed to improving the communities he lives or has lived in, is where his outreach efforts are focused. Being in a position to give back, Al undoubtedly recognizes the difference he can make in the lives of those around him.
“ Giving back is part of what fuels me to continue to do my best,” said Horford. “The better I do the more I can help, it is my responsibility to help make a difference in whatever way I can.”
Al has worked closely with the Atlanta Hawks on a variety of community outreach efforts including: Al’s Amigos, a ticket program in which Al invites 30 people from local organizations to a game, Al Horford’s Fast Break Reading Program, a program designed to encourage young children to read, Anti-Bullying Campaign, Annual Thanksgiving Event, and Al’s Annual Holiday Party. In addition to his community work with the Hawks, Al has also worked with the NBA on their global outreach efforts. Participating in Basketball Without Borders, a program designed to promote the game of basketball globally, Al has ventured around the world twice in this international event. In 2009 Al was sent to Mexico City and in 2010 to Singapore, alongside other NBA players and coaches. During both trips Al was able to mentor and coach top basketball recruits of the region, visit an orphanage, assist in the Special Olympics, conduct an NBA Fit Clinic, and share his passion for the game. In 2010 Al was featured in a PSA to raise awareness about AIDS as part of the NBA’s fight against AIDS initiative.
On a personal level Al has worked closely with The Latin American Association of Atlanta, The Sandy Springs Mission, Caminar Latino, La Amistad, Star House, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, The Athletes Relief Foundation, and local charities of the Dominican Republic.
